In 2018, it took 63 days from the moment a vulnerability was published to the first exploit in the wild. In 2021, 32. In 2023, 5. In 2024, the number went negative — exploitation before the patch existed.
In 2025, the fastest recorded breakout from initial access to lateral movement was 27 seconds.
Twenty-seven seconds.
Now flip to the other side. In March 2026, Amazon's AI coding tool pushed an update that caused 1.6 million errors and 120,000 lost orders. Three days later, another incident — 6.3 million lost orders. The response? A 90-day code safety reset. Two mandatory reviews. Documentation before every deployment. A Fortune 10 company slamming the brakes because the speed of their own tools outran their ability to check what those tools produced.
Both sides of this — building and breaking — now operate at machine speed. Every mechanism we have for making decisions about either still runs on human speed.
Code review. Patch cycles. Risk assessment. Governance frameworks. All of it — biological clock speed. The tools don't wait.
This is not new. Offense has always been ahead of defense.
In the '90s, viruses spread via floppy disks. You had weeks. In the 2000s, worms moved over the internet — days. The 2010s, ransomware and APTs — hours. Now? Minutes. Sometimes negative minutes.
Each cycle, defense eventually caught up. But the window of damage kept shrinking and the systems at risk kept getting more critical. We went from protecting desktop PCs to protecting hospitals, elections, and food supply chains.
The pattern holds. The margin for error doesn't.
Over 60% of new CVEs are now exploited within 48 hours. AI-related CVEs alone went from roughly 300 in 2023 to over 1,000 in 2025. CISA tells defenders they have 15 days to patch critical vulnerabilities. 60% remain unpatched even after that window closes.
Meanwhile, Anthropic just announced Project Glasswing. Their model Mythos found a 27-year-old vulnerability in OpenBSD and a 16-year-old one in FFmpeg — bugs that automated testing hit 5 million times without catching. That's the defense side getting smarter. That's good.
But the same capability that finds a 27-year-old bug to fix it can find one to exploit it. The tool doesn't care which side you're on.
Here's what nobody frames correctly.
Everyone treats this as a technical problem. Better scanners. Better models. More responsible AI. More frameworks. But the failure mode isn't technical. It's temporal.
Humans haven't gotten dumber. We've gotten less time. The space between "this exists" and "decide what to do about it" has compressed to the point where judgment becomes a luxury.
I feel it. I get ideas at 2 AM and I can have a working prototype by sunrise. That was impossible two years ago. And I'm not special — anyone with a laptop and a prompt can do the same. The excitement is real. But underneath it there's this low hum of anxiety that doesn't switch off. Because the thing I'm building at machine speed, I'm governing at human speed. And so is everyone else.
Amusement and anxiety. Simultaneously. That's what it feels like to live inside the compression.
There's a growing market of people selling solutions to this. AI safety frameworks. Governance platforms. Security copilots. Each one promises to close the gap between machine tempo and human judgment.
I'm suspicious of all of them.
Not because safety doesn't matter. But because the confidence of people claiming to have answers is itself a red flag — when the core problem is that we're outrunning our own ability to comprehend what we're doing.
The honest position isn't a framework. It's admitting that we're building faster than we can think, breaking faster than we can fix, and nobody has caught up yet.
Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something at a speed they haven't verified either.
